John Beard rode his old horse called Old Dick in the September 22, 1981 Land Run, starting from what is now Kickapoo Street. He claimed 160 acres running from Union to Harrison and to Highland to 7th street. Later he donated 100 acres to get the railroad to come to Shawnee.
