Why plan a trip to Shawnee?

Shawnee is located at the geographical center of Interstate 40, just 30 minutes east of OKC. A unique multicultural gem, in Shawnee the old-west rural and modern urban mingle happily!

Home to four Native American tribes with a rich pre-statehood history, our city of just over 30,000 boasts of world-class museums, a bustling historic downtown district, recreational lakes, and more.

We are home to Oklahoma's oldest art museum (and OK's only mummies), the professional basketball team Potawatomi Fire, and the birthplace of astronaut Gordon Cooper and actor Brad Pitt!

The Santa Fe Depot's castle tower looms over a blue sky with fluffy white clouds.

Severe Weather

Located in "Tornado Alley", Oklahoma has a reputation for severe weather, but instances of severely damaging storms are rare!

Tornadoes are the most likely to form during the months of March through May, and sometimes in November. However, while the odds of a tornado forming during most of the year are negligible, it is important to be weather-aware.

If you're concerned about traveling during these times of year, check out our weather tips!
